D’MOSS trails walk Sunday 19 February 2012 10am | From Umbilo Park

D’MOSS trails walk Sunday 19 February 2012

At 10 o’clock on Sunday 19 February we meet again at Umbilo Park. The bollards will be moved this week, Parks Department has promised, so we will be able to park in the shaded parking lot. The “friends of the Sea View D’MOSS trail walkers” will again provide tea and cold juice at the halfway point, but they have asked that walkers contribute R5 each to off-set the cost of these refreshments.

From Umbilo Park we walk along the Umbilo River canal, and near the
end turn up north, leaving the M7 behind us and follow the trail into the valleys in the Umbilo/Carrington Heights area. Rangers from Natural Resources are working this week making sure there are no obstacles on the trail. We emerge from the forest at the bottom of River Drive and walk up this steep road towards Fenniscowles Road and the Stellawood Cemetry where the “friends” will meet us; at 29  53  21  34 S  and  30  58  24  29 E!

We continue northwards, (either along Fielden Drive, or through part of the cemetery), passed Glenmore School into Hutchinson Park. From the Park we cross Fielden Drive and make our way towards Grosvenor Road. Once in Grosvenor Road it is south down to the river again, under the M7, around the Portuguese Club following the bend in the river, back under the M7, and along the canal to Umbilo Park.

Sturdy shoes, hats, and sun block are recommended. We expect the walk to take just on three hours. The highest point on the route through the cemetery is 90m above sea level; the road in front of Howard College is 50m higher.
